WHY I LOVE RIVER CRUISES-AND YOU WILL TOO
SIZE DOES MATTER: Most river cruise ships only hold around 160 people. Just enough fellow passengers to give you an opportunity to get to know them over the course of the cruise, but not overwhelming. THIS IS WHY I LOVE RIVER CRUISES-AND YOU WILL TOO. On large cruise ships you might not see the same person twice; not so on a river cruise with less than 200 people. On a river cruise there is a certain camaraderie among the passengers and the crew which I find comforting.
DIET? Of course you can maintain your diet on a river cruise. There are always healthy choices and vegetarian options available on river cruises. Just don’t look at the beautiful presentations of the breads and pastries.
However, if you do indulge you can reassure yourself that you will be taking one of those walking excursions soon, so all will be well.
No, on river cruises there aren’t any bowling alleys onboard,
but there are options for working out. Most river cruise ships now have wellness programs, there is a small gym and you can always hop up to the sun deck for a few laps around the ship. Along with the regular walking shore excursions, you can take a bike tour with a guide.
BROADWAY: If you need to see a Broadway style production, a river cruise is not for you. They do, however, have someone playing piano in the lounge in the afternoons and evenings. Instead of large productions, local talent is brought onboard to perform local favorites.
HISTORY: A confession: I hated history in school. All those time lines and dry facts. Step off a river cruise and history is in front of you. Rivers were the highways of their day. These cities are a portal into the way things were. In Europe especially, they preserve history, the good and the even the not so good.
